Grace O’Neill from Harper’s BAZAAR & Elle chooses her 2018 Flaunter Emerging Designers

The Flaunter Emerging Designer campaign showcases collections by 100 top graduates from Australia’s leading fashion schools. The 2018 participants are an incredibly talented bunch, making it the toughest year ever for our judges to pick their top 5 ‘designers to watch’.

Today, we reveal the finalists as selected by Grace O’Neill, Fashion Features Director at Elle and Harper’s BAZAAR Australia. With her sharp wit and cool-girl vibe, Grace is one of our favourite voices in the fashion industry. FYI she also produces a FAB podcast with fellow journalist Isabelle Truman called After Work Drinks, which we highly recommend.

As someone who spends their days surrounded by the latest and greatest labels, Grace has a well-trained eye for spotting designers with an edge…

CHELSEA BETALLI (FDS TAFE NSW)

“There’s a great rock n roll-meets-Studio 54 sensibility to Chelsea’s designs which I love. The pieces put a playful spin on wardrobe staples we’ve seen done every-which-way – from the gold netted mini shirt (or is it a dress?) to the Bowie-esque glitter jumpsuit with statement lapels.”

NAOMI JOHAN (FDS TAFE NSW)

“Naomi Johan’s collection displays an elevated understanding of form, proportion and fit – I think her blazers are genius.”

TARA ZUCCHIATTI (FDS TAFE NSW)

“Tara’s collection struck me as being very commercial which is not, I repeat, not a dirty word in fashion. Designing pieces with wearability in mind is a very impressive skill for a young designer. I am in love with these plaid/leather trousers.”

ARIANA PATAWARAN (UTS)

“Ariana Patawaran’s collection is so chic! Beautifully crafted garments and a very strong brand vision. I would wear a lot of pieces in this collection.”

BENJAMIN GARG (RMIT)

“I was immediately drawn to Benjamin Garg’s use of colour – so optimistic, playful and fun. His use of ruffles, tulle and shirring feel modern and fresh, I love it.”

A huge congratulations to all the finalists!
