Sustainable children’s clothing brand Earthlings United announces that it will close its website store on Black Friday this year, urging consumers and industry peers to rethink the culture of heavy discounting, over-consumption and fast fashion waste.
While Black Friday has become a ubiquitous retail event, driving billions in sales, many of the purchases are impulsive, heavily discounted, and short-lived. Brand founder Anna Babidge explains:
“We believe in clothes that are designed to last, not just designed to sell. By closing our store for Black Friday, we’re signalling that buying less, buying better and being thoughtful is more important than chasing discount culture.”
A global survey found that 42% of shoppers regret purchases made during Black Friday sales.
Clothes that grow with your kids
Earthlings United are on a mission to reduce clothing waste and drive positive environmental change with their innova- tive range of children’s clothing. The range of comfortable and practical childrenswear has been designed to grow with children, fitting them for at least 4 years, extending the life of each garment and significantly reducing waste.
The Earthlings United concept was developed by siblings Anna Babidge and Rick McKeon, who grew up in a large family in Sydney. Anna’s prior experience in both industrial design and visual merchandising saw her work with internationally recognised brands including Rag & Bone, Alexander Wang, Dior and Aesop. Increas- ingly disheartened by the wastefulness of the fashion industry, Anna was determined to create a better way.
“After having my own family, and seeing first-hand how quickly my children grew out of their clothes, I wanted to create a clothing range which would wear better and last longer.
When my son was young, he had a pair of cotton jersey pants that he was able to wear from age 1 to 5. This sparked the idea: what if all kids’ clothes could be this versatile?”.
- Anna Babidge, Founder
The Earthlings United range has been uniquely designed to accommodate children from 3 to 10 years in just two sizes, 3 – 6 years and 7 – 10 years.
Cleverly accommodating growth by extended leg and arm cuffs, a dress that conforms to a top, wider bodies and lower crotch lengths, the range has extra room in all the places kids need as they grow.
Garments are made in Portugal using organic cotton and coloured with natural mineral dyes from the Earth and no harmful chemicals. The clothing undergoes a special finishing process which also enhances durability and ensures that the natural dyes don’t run in the wash.
